Man allegedly tries to take infant son’s life By Bryan Kirk SEGUIN — Seguin Police charged Rubicel Calderon, 25, a Mexican national with the attempted capital murder of his infant son. Police were dispatched to a home in the 600 block of East Ireland Wednesday morning for a disturbance that occurred the previous night. The child’s mother told police she saw her common-law husband attempting to suffocate their 8-month-old son with a pillowcase. “The baby was sleeping in his bedroom in the northwest corner of the house, and the mother and her husband were in another part of the house,” said Seguin Police Lt. Mike Watts. The mother of the child told officers she went into her child’s room and found her husband standing over the crib. “She saw that her husband was holding a quilt-like pillowcase over the child’s face,” Watts said. “She ran to where her husband was and attempted to stop him.” The woman reportedly told police she struggled with Calderon, and he allegedly shoved her to the floor. During the struggle, she said Calderon dropped the quilt. She reportedly told police Calderon returned to the crib and placed his hands over the child’s mouth. “When she went after him again, he thrust the baby at her and left,” Watts said. As Calderon was leaving, he reportedly threatened his wife, Watts said. Family members from Mexico who are staying with the couple, urged the woman not to call authorities, Watts said. During their investigation, police noted bruising on the infant’s face. So far, there is no evidence Calderon or anyone in the house abused the infant prior to Wednesday’s incident, Watts said. The child, who receives special medical care, was taken to Guadalupe Valley Hospital for examination. The woman was advised to call police if she saw Calderon in the area again. Meanwhile, Judge Larry Morawietz issued a warrant for Calderon’s arrest Wednesday evening. A short time later, Calderon was arrested without incident a block from his home. He was taken to Seguin Police Headquarters and questioned. “[The case] is still under investigation,” Watts said. Watts said Child Protective Services is actively participating in the investigation with police. Calderon was magistrated by Judge Edmundo Castellanos Friday morning and is being held at the Guadalupe County Jail in lieu of $250,000 bond. © 2004 Seguin Gazette-Enterprise Inc.
